Deadcember is ... alive

Who takes up the dread challenge of the Deadcember 2019???

Thursday, 21 November 2019

The temptation was too great ...

I saw a sale on E-Bay which I just couldn't resist, some really old school figures a couple of which I already have,  but 15 miniatures for £1.50 each including the one I was really after was for sale on its own from another seller for £8.99. I'm very pleased and they will find use in Rangers of Shadow Deep.

Deadcember 2019

One of the pleasures in life is keeping up with the hobby work of Rab over on the  Geekly Digest blog. His blog had not been updated for a while and I located him on Instagram so I duly messaged him about this years Deadcember. Rab replied and explained that due to work and study he is  unable to coordinate this year and offered the role with his blessing.

Hmmmm ..... well lets give it ago shall we.

The rules are as follows
On the first of December the premier annual "paint a dead/undead minature" competition will begin!
I'll start an album here of the entries as they come in, as well as a thread on the oldhammer forum for users to see the subset painted by other forum users.
What you need to know if you want to enter:
1.                  This is a painting challenge for 28mm "scale" miniatures painted during December 2017
1.                  The theme this year is (un)dead, meaning casualty figures are as welcome as the usual undead monsters and creatures
1.                  An entry can either be a single model, or a group - there is no advantage or disadvantage inherent to either choice
1.                  Email a photo of your miniature(s) before painting, and no more than two of the finished item, against a plain background so your painting really shines. Send your pictures to Deadcember entries
1.                  You can enter as many times as you like - the more the merrier - but each entry will be independently considered.
1.                  The winner will be decided by me and will be based purely on my honest choice of which is my favourite - quality of painting, oldhammeriness, any conversion work, etc. will all feed in to it, I'm sure.

I'm really looking forward to what everyone produces!

Zomtober 2019 Week 4 and a bit ...

Last knocking before the midnight bell chimes a Dungeon Saga armoured troll

Zomtober 2019 Week 4

A slow week but some progress has been made. In October 2018 fellow Blogger Hobgoblinry published a rather nice photo of some 54mm Russian Fantasy Figures. (see below)

Scale wise they looked just right as ogres for Mordheim, complete with the right weapon options too and considerably cheaper than trying to afford a GW Mordheim Ogre from E-Bay. The figures arrived quickly and were duly snaffled by Grandson number one who broke the  club off the one I was after.
Being a kindly old man I `volunteered' to repair the figure and he duly forgot all about it .... my conscience is clear (ish)!

No where as good as Hobgoblinry I present this weeks effort

Four days left and only one figure left to do a Mantic armoured troll, another tenuous zombie link but with human coloured skin he'll pass as a zombie hunting medieval survivor.

Zomtober 2019 Week 3

My humble efforts for this week ..

Four plastic Studio Miniatures Zombies, including a UPS delivery man, hence the all brown ensemble .. they need more work ....

For of Mantic Games' Walking Dead zombies, wonderful sculpts and a joy to paint.

Two survivors bothe from Hasslefree Miniatures

A studio Miniatures walking dead zombie from the first episode  of the TV series

And as a palette cleanser a dwarf for my Mordheim warband, because he's a survivor and hunts zombies. I've called him Zabadak after a fellow blogger, I've never met him but the name just suited the figure. No offence intended!!!

Zomtober 2019 Week 2

The first offering this week is a zombie figure that I received from Studio Miniatures for buying two boxes of their plastic zombies a few years ago. I have to say it is the worst zombie figure I have ever painted, I'm not sure if it was supposed to have it's skin sliding off or whether they are clothes, the detail is awful. Anyway done now ....

The first of my Mantic Ghouls which I'm using as a zombie had a base layer of Necrotic Flesh and clothes painted Army Painter zombie brown all washed with  washed with dark tone.  Army Painter Gun Metal on the cleaver.

The second Ghoul has Army painter skeleton bone skin and Citadel Mechrite red clothes. I need to add a highlight to these and some deeper shadows having seen the photos up close.

Zomtober 2019 Week 1

Well this weeks effort is a Dungeon Saga Zombie Troll from Mantic Games. The figure was cleaned of any mould lines, or flash then it was base-coated in Vallejo grey surface primer. The first colour was Army Painter Desert Yellow over everything followed by a wash of Army painter strong tone to pick out the details. Highlights were added by mixing Desert yellow with Skeleton Bone and dry-brushing the model in several lighter shades.
The open sores were picked out with Army painter Crusted Sore and once dry the wounds had Citadel  Blood for the Blood God added.
The rock was painted with Foundry Arctic Grey triad.
The loin cloth was Army Painter crystal blue with a black wash and a grey drybrush as it looked too clean and bright.
The base followed Old Sarges How to Paint Stone Walls tutorial

Zomtober 2019

Well October draws ever nearer and I am preparing for the announcement of Zomtober 2019, unless Pulp Citizen of the Eclectic Gentleman Tabletop Gamer blog decides not to run it this year.

In preparation I have rummaged through the pile of shame and decided to paint up the following

An Ogre mercenary for Mordheim  as a survivor, well it works for me, a bit tenuous I know.

A Mantic Zombie Troll from the Dungeon Saga Kickstarter

A Mantic Armoured Troll

Two Mantic Ghouls which I think may count as un-dead.

Two Studio Miniatures plastic zombies.

A Hasslefree Alice.

A Hasslefree Suzi.

And finally a Studio Miniatures Little Girl Zombie.

Don't expect too much as I haven't lifted a brush since last year. It will be nice simple base coats and a trip to the Army painter dip for these models.

What have I done ....

Well it seemed like a good idea at the time.

This core set with the additional `Horror' expansion means my total for today is

Painted: 0.

Bought: 171

One day soon I'm going to add up my unpainted minis and I'll know exactly how much I've got to do. This will be a painters confession !!!

The preciousssss

Just before Christmas I received a message from Ensign Madcap on the Lead Adventure Forum who had a spare one of these. It now resides in my collection now the only decision I have to make is what colour scheme to paint him and whether to arm him with a sword or spear.
